The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is set to begin on Thursday with a repeat of last edition’s final between defending champions England and New Zealand in Ahmedabad. The World Cup matches are scheduled across 10 cities in India, from Dharamsala in the north to Bengaluru and Chennai in the south.
However, as excitement builds up for the mega event, a man shared photos from Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium during a warm-up match between Australia and Pakistan on Tuesday showing deplorable condition of the seats. C Venkatesh, a cricket writer, analyst and commentator, shared several photos and videos showing the spectator seats filled with bird droppings.
“Nothing much has changed in Uppal stadium. Only some window dressing and spectator comfort still not taken care of in full,” he said in a tweet.
However, after the tweets went viral, Venkatesh in another series of tweets clarified that the bad condition of seats is only there in the Western Terrace.
“My tweets on bad condition of seats in some stands of the Uppal Stadium have gone viral. Some people outside the country r trying to take advantage. I wud like to clarify that the stadium has been renovated with brand new seats & only Western Terrace stands old seats are bad,” he wrote.
“HCA, it seems, didn’t have enough time to replace all the chairs before the World Cup. Bt they shud hv got the old chairs cleaned up before the match. The rest of the facilities in the stadium are excellent and no one should have any doubts about hosting capacities of India,” he said further.
Hyderabad is set to host three matches of the World Cup beginning with Pakistan taking on the Netherlands on October 6, New Zealand versus Netherlands on October 9 and Pakistan versus Sri Lanka on October 10.
