Abhijit Chakraborty, the founder of a company called Alphanumero, has introduced a new policy granting employees two extra days off annually – one on their birthday and the other to celebrate the birthday of someone close to them.
This comes at a time when the country is debating toxic workplaces and unnecessary work stress, and marks a significant shift in corporate culture, where work takes precedence over personal celebrations. Chakraborty announced the new policy in a LinkedIn post, and said that both these days off will be treated as holidays so that the employees’ leave balance is not affected.
In the post, Chakraborty also said that early in his career, a superior gave him a “strange look, as if a crime was committed” when he requested for a leave of absence on his birthday. He wrote, “If it’s someone’s birthday, they deserve a gift. Not a leave deduction and weird reactions.”
