Social media has helped break several stereotypical notions about India, with foreign nationals sharing the contrasting side of the country beyond “unhygienic” street food and a lack of civic sense and public decency. However, a tourist recently shared a harrowing experience while exploring the streets of Amritsar, Punjab.

Alex Wanders, a travel vlogger, called out a man who allegedly harassed his wife, Ameana, in a public place. The incident unfolded while the couple was waiting for their cab. Wanders accused the man in question of approaching Ameana and asking her for her phone number while standing close to her. “Why are you asking for her phone number? What you did is very strange. You are very strange. You approach a random female by herself and ask for her phone number within two seconds; that’s very strange. Yeah, you shouldn’t do that again, ok. You are a bit crazy,” Alex can be heard saying in the video.

Sharing the video on Instagram, he wrote, “We were stood waiting peacefully on the side of the road waiting for our uber when a random guy came over and started harassing @amina_finds, asking for her number, and getting close to her right in front of me. We didn’t capture this on video but Amina began filming directly afterwards because she didn’t feel safe.”

“This is the moment I confronted him, he suddenly forgot English even though two seconds earlier he was speaking it perfectly. Maybe better me. How is this seen as acceptable in modern day India?” he added.

The video quickly drew attention, prompting a response from Amritsar Police. “Jai Hind, Kindly share your contact details and place of incident,” the official handle of Amritsar Police wrote. Several other users and influencers reacted to the video, with one saying, “What a drama! a total stranger asked me 7 years ago for my number. 2 years later I married him. If he wouldn’t have asked for my number we wouldn’t be married today lol bechara ne kuch bhi galat nhi kiya bas natak kr rahe h ye log.”

“I’m sorry but asking for a phone number is harmless. If this is “creepy” for you just stay inside. You posting him to make him seem like an “absolute weirdo” is the real weirdo behavior,” another user defended the Indian man. “Guys please dont leave your girl alone in india there is no safety,” a third user reacted.
