Every winter, thousands of flamingos grace Mumbai’s coastal wetlands in a breath-taking annual migration. Among the favoured spots is Karave village in Navi Mumbai, where the migratory birds add a vibrant pink hue to the landscape. This spectacular display, which begins in November, continues through the spring and summer months.

During this time, birdwatchers throng to the area to observe flocks of flamingos and seagulls, which predominantly migrate from places like Kutch in Gujarat and Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan. Some of these birds are believed to have travelled from as far as the Middle East, Iraq, Europe, Central Asia, and even parts of Africa.

In a video shared by news agency ANI, flamingos and seagulls can be seen gracefully moving around the creek in Karave village. “Maharashtra: A large number of migratory flamingos, seagulls, and other birds have arrived at the creek in Karave village in Navi Mumbai,” ANI wrote on X.

According to the National Geographic website, flamingos build their nests resembling mud mounds along waterways. At the peak of the mound, the female lays a single egg in a shallow depression. Both parents take turns incubating the egg to keep it warm. After approximately 30 days, the egg hatches.

Flamingo chicks are born white, covered in soft feathers, and with a straight bill. As they grow, their bill gradually begins to curve downward. The parents recognise their chick by its voice. After about three weeks, the adult flamingos gather the young into large groups known as crèches, where the chicks begin to hunt for food independently, said the website.
