Jayanagar in Bengaluru, once celebrated for its leafy avenues and serene residential vibe, is now a shadow of its former self, at least according to one longtime resident whose heartfelt post has gone viral.
Rohith Simha, a resident of the area, took to X to express his dismay over the dramatic changes in Jayanagar. He reminisced that earlier generations built Jayanagar not just as real estate but as a place to live well as a community. But now, he said, many of those houses have been sold to real estate developers, setting off a chain reaction.
“Once a calm and peaceful residential area, Jayanagar has turned into a busy, noisy, and dusty commercial hub,” he wrote.
“Forefathers did everything to ensure quality of life, but subsequent generations went behind money and sold it to real estate who further made those not willing also to sell.”

The post quickly struck a chord, with many Bengaluru residents chiming in to say the same is happening all over the city. From Chandra Layout to Vijayanagara, the pattern is familiar – old family homes replaced with multi-storey paying-guest facitilies, narrow lanes choked with traffic, and no corresponding boost to infrastructure, they said.
One user wrote, “Story across Bengaluru… Bengaluru is already the PG capital of the world… Every second plot now has a multi-storied paying guest structure violating every norm while BBMP looks the other way.”
Another user wrote, “Its the entire Bangalore. I stay Bangalore West and 5 years back, to touch traffic I was supposed to travel 5km and now, the main road of our area is so flooded with vehicles. Each day, new building comes up. No infra, no planning, no basic needs are met. Bangalore is going down.”
Another person wrote, “Same thing about Chandra Layout, RPC Layout, Vijayanagara and surrounding areas. Every big house is turned into a PG. Everything such as the sewage system, water supply, roads is overloaded. People are getting old and not able to adjust with this type of commercial activities.”
Meanwhile, another person had a different point of view. “Peace cannot go hand in hand with development, money, employment etc. ppl have to sacrifice something for something else.”
Even business leaders have been voicing their frustration over Bengaluru’s crumbling infrastrucutre. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder of Biocon, recently posted a video from Ecuador showcasing smooth, well-maintained streets, and said, “Clean and well designed streets in San Cristobal island in Ecuador. Bengaluru hang your head in shame.”
