Assam’s Guwahati came to a standstill on Saturday as torrential rain crippled daily life. On the outskirts, in Bonda, a tragic landslide killed five people. According to a PTI report, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a “red alert” had been issued in 18 districts on Friday. Amid the chaos, a video of locals rescuing a lost turtle is doing rounds on the Internet.

Share by CM Sarma, the viral video shows the lost turtle being rescued by the locals and released back into the Brahmaputra river. “A ray of hope amidst dense clouds. This turtle, lost in the floods of Guwahati, was released back into the Brahmaputra by the joint efforts of local people and the administration. Residents urge authorities for immediate action on drainage issues. Stay safe and avoid #flooded areas.”

At least 28 people have lost their lives across multiple northeastern states over the past two days, as relentless rainfall triggered widespread floods and deadly landslides across the region. Authorities across the Northeast have been placed on high alert following intense rainfall on Friday, which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) linked to a depression over neighbouring Bangladesh.

A red alert has been issued for Saturday in several districts of Assam, including Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Darrang, and Udalguri.
