OpenAI’s Sora 2 takes over social media with life-like AI avatars; here’s how to make your own ‘cameos’

One of the key features of Sora 2 is the ability to design AI avatars of yourself, called cameos. These cameos can be dropped into any scene you imagine.

OpenAI has rolled out Sora 2, the latest generation of its video model, alongside a brand-new app called Sora. Much like Instagram or TikTok, this app is designed for creating and sharing AI-generated videos, but with a twist. Powered by Sora 2’s upgraded realism, physics, and instruction-following, users can generate strikingly life-like clips straight from text prompts.

One of the key features is the ability to design AI avatars of yourself, which OpenAI calls cameos. These cameos can be dropped into any scene you imagine — from wrestling an elephant to playing volleyball on a sunny beach. OpenAI introduced the app with a promotional video featuring CEO Sam Altman, who described Sora 2 as “the most powerful imagination engine ever built.”

Within hours of the announcement, Sora 2 took over X, with creators and tech enthusiasts experimenting with the tool. Popular YouTuber iJustine showcased an entire explainer video generated only through text prompts. Her cameo delivers the narration exactly as instructed. She wrote, “Testing out Sora 2 and the new Sora app… thought I’d try to make an entire video using only prompts and have my cameo avatar say what I tell it to. What do you think?”

Other users joined the trend with their own wild creations. One clip reimagined Rick and Morty through Sora 2, while another showed Sam Altman at a train station, making everyone around him break into dance.
