A man in eastern China who won a Rs 11.6 crore lottery prize has drawn widespread criticism after spending large sums on female live-streamers while giving nothing to his wife, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

The man’s wife, identified only by her surname Yuan, told Henan TV that she felt “betrayed” after discovering that her husband had spent much of his winnings on gambling and online hosts. The couple, from Dezhou in Shandong province, married in 2016.

According to Yuan, her husband won the lottery on December 17 last year, taking home an after-tax amount of Rs 9.4 crore (8.14 million yuan). “At first, I was as happy as he was,” she said. “He told me I could buy anything I liked with the money.”

He also gave her a bank card, claiming it contained Rs 3.4 crore. Trusting him, Yuan said she never checked the balance and kept the card in a drawer.

Soon after, her husband’s behaviour changed. He stopped sharing money with her and began gambling during the day while spending his nights watching and tipping women who streamed online. According to SCMP, he gave one live-streamer a single tip worth Rs 1.4 crore.

In July, Yuan discovered her husband was travelling with the same woman and confronted him at a railway station. She later obtained chat records showing her husband calling the woman “honey” and referring to himself as “hubby.” In one message, he asked her: “What kind of old man do you like? How about an old man with a lot of money, like me?”

Yuan then checked the bank card and found it had no funds. “You have treated me unfairly,” she told him, according to SCMP. “I have made so many contributions to our family. Do you have any conscience?”

She said her husband had once told her he wanted “a live-streamer to deliver a child” for him. “Before he won this lottery prize, I thought of living with him for my whole life,” Yuan said. “But he betrayed me in an instant. I really wish he had never won the lottery.”

The husband did not deny his actions. “I have spent all the money. Now she has sued me for divorce. Let the court decide everything,” he told the media.

Lawyer Xi Junqi from Henan Zhongdi Law Firm told SCMP that lottery winnings obtained during marriage are considered joint property. “If the husband’s tipping far exceeds normal family expenses, the wife can ask the court to exclude him from sharing the assets,” Xi said.

He added that if the tipping was linked to “an immoral relationship” with the live-streamer, the wife could ask for the money to be returned.
