Top 10 fastest-growing careers by 2034 list: When people imagine the future of work, the first thought usually goes straight to artificial intelligence taking over industries and wiping out jobs. But a new report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) paints a more layered picture. In its Employment Projections: 2024–2034, released in August 2025, the agency estimates that the American economy will add about 5.2 million jobs over the next decade.
Interestingly, a large share of these new opportunities won’t be tied to Silicon Valley’s AI boom at all. By 2034, the total number of people employed in the US is expected to reach 175.2 million. That’s a 3.1 per cent increase compared to today, a slower climb than the impressive 13 per cent growth seen in the last decade, but one that reflects big changes in how work is being reshaped by automation, shifting demographics, and consumer needs.
The report points out that 10 types of jobs are expected to grow the most by 2034, and the reasons go beyond just new technology. Healthcare, artificial intelligence, and clean energy are the three big drivers of this growth. Together, these fields are shaping a future that’s more connected, eco-friendly, and advanced, and they could end up changing not only industries but daily life as well.
Healthcare is set to see the biggest boost. Jobs in this sector are projected to grow by 8.4 per cent by 2034. The main reasons are pretty straightforward: America’s population is getting older, which means more people will need medical care, rehabilitation, and day-to-day support. At the same time, chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease are becoming more common, keeping the demand for healthcare workers high.
Artificial intelligence, meanwhile, is playing a complicated role in the labour market. On one hand, computer and mathematical occupations are set to grow by 10.1 per cent over the next ten years. Demand is especially strong for data scientists who can make sense of massive datasets, information security analysts who can defend against cyber threats, and AI or machine learning engineers who are building the next generation of intelligent systems. These jobs are not only among the fastest-growing but also among the best-paid, underscoring how central data, cybersecurity, and automation expertise are becoming to the modern economy.
On the other hand, the spread of automation is also shrinking certain kinds of jobs. Office support roles, routine sales work, and production tasks, things like filing paperwork, answering customer service calls, or operating on assembly lines, are increasingly being handed off to algorithms, chatbots, and robots.
A separate study from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab backs this up, showing that younger workers in fields heavily exposed to AI, such as marketing and customer support, are already facing job cuts. Older, more experienced employees, however, have managed to hold on to their roles. The troubling implication is that traditional entry-level positions are disappearing, which could change how new graduates get their start in the workforce.
