Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 3, the company’s latest flagship phone has officially launched in China. The new Mi Mix 3 is the industry first phone to feature 10GB RAM. The phone will also come with 5G capabilities (in 2019), and includes 10 watt wireless charging. This time around Xiaomi has made a major overhaul on its premium smartphone in terms of design and internal hardware.
Following Oppo Find X’s footsteps, Mi Mix 3 comes with a pop-up slider mechanism that incorporates the front cameras and other sensors. Further, Mi Mix 3 now supports 960fps slow-mo recording, similar to one found on Samsung’s premium Galaxy S9 series. Mi Mix 3 has a price starting at CNY 3,299 (around Rs 34,800) for the base 6GB RAM model.
We compare Xiaomi’s latest flagship smartphone, Mi Mix 3 with its predecessor, Mi Mix 2. The comparison is based on the preliminary specification sheet of Mi Mix 3.
Mi Mix 3 features a ceramic-clad design with the frame built out of 7000-series aluminium alloy. The phone has a sliding mechanism, which is magnetic and houses all the sensors and front cameras. In comparison, the Mi Mix 2 also came with ceramic body and aerospace-grade aluminium alloy frame, though it did not have the sliding mechanism.
The new Mi Mix 3 has a bigger footprint compared to the Mi Mix 2. Moreover, the former flaunts an all-screen display with negligible bezel covering the front. Mi Mix 2 had chunky bezels at the bottom part in the front. While many criticised the awkward placement of the front-camera on Mi Mix 2, thankfully the cameras on the Mi Mix 3 now sit at the top of the phone.

Mi Mix 3 features a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The phone has a 93.4 per cent screen-to-body ratio, which will help maximise the viewing the experience. Mi Mix 2 came with a 5.99-inch full HD+ IPS panel with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and resolution of 2160×1080 pixels. The display on the Mi Mix 2 has a pixel density of 570ppi and DCI-P3 colour gamut.
Mi Mix 3 is powered by the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor paired with Adreno 630 GPU for graphics. Meanwhile, Mi Mix 2 runs the former flagship chipset, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 which is paired with Adreno 540 GPU for graphics rendition. But there will be another variant in 2019, which will support 5G. That version could run a newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor.
Xiaomi has put dual cameras both at the back and up front on its new Mi Mix 3 flagship smartphone. The smartphone features a pop-up slider mechanism that integrates the front camera. The whole display slides down and the camera module is revealed.
Mi Mix 3 sports 12MP rear camera with a 26mm wide-angle lens and a 12MP secondary camera. The primary camera has a Sony IMX363 sensor, while the secondary camera has a Samsung S5K3M3+ sensor. The dual cameras on the phone come with dual LED flash and support 4K recording, 960fps slow-mo and optical zoom.

Mi Mix 3 houses dual camera up front as well packing a 24MP camera with Super Pixel low-light technology and a 2MP secondary camera to add depth of field. The cameras on the Mi Mix 3 come with AI scene recognition features as well. In comparison, Mi Mix 2 came with a single camera module both at the front and rear side. The phone features a 12MP primary camera with 4-axis OIS, PDAF and dual-tone LED flash and a 5MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture.
On the software front, Mi Mix 3 is said to run MIUI 10. Meanwhile, Mi Mix 2 came with Android 7.0 Nougat OS layered on top of custom MIUI 9 skin.
In terms of battery capacity, Mi Mix 3 has a 3200mAh battery and supports Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology. The phone includes 10watt wireless charging and comes with 5G support. In comparison, the Mi Mix 2 carries a slightly bigger 3400mAh battery and support Quick Charge 3.0 technology.
As for the storage, Mi Mix 3 comes in 6GB RAM/128GB storage and 8GB RAM/128GB storage configuration. Xiaomi has launched a Forbidden City Special Edition model that packs a massive 10GB of RAM and 256GB onboard storage. In India, Mi Mix 2 was launched in a single RAM/storage option- 6GB RAM/128GB internal storage.
