I once had a flatmate who has been running cross country since college. On the days he was not buried himself under piles of course work assignments, he used to go out for a run. Considering that we were living in a part of the world where it rains pretty much every day, and the sun used to disappear faster than a deal on Black Friday, my friend used to wear a reflective bib to avoid being a roadkill. It was not the best of fashion choices as he used look like an orange blob slithering down the road, nor was it practical since he had to wash it every day. Reviewing ifrogz Free Rein Reflect Bluetooth headphones reminded of how his runs would have been a lot better and less cumbersome.

These headphones are not for indoor use, unless you are pounding away those calories on a treadmill. Silent discos can be quite the riot despite it being a mass of sweaty bodies grinding on each other, but I wouldn’t recommend using Free Rein Reflect for this purpose. These are made for outdoor activity and they serve that purpose very well. The ear buds come with tiny shark fins that stop them from popping out, and they are connected by a reflective cable to catch the attention of over speeding motorists. The best feature I reckon is that the reflective cable is tangle-free. Stuff them inside your pockets, mosh them with other cable wires, and they will never get tangled.

All the control buttons are on the right, making it easy to change volume, switch tracks and answer phone calls. It would be a difficult adjustment for left-handed folks like my friend, but, to be fair, most products are not made keeping this small population in mind.

I found the Free Rein Reflect easy to pair with my Android device, and it lasted for at least four hours on a single charge. One advantage that sets these headphones apart is that the microphone attached to the ear piece allows you to take phone calls on the run without stopping even once. The controls are moisture-resistant; meaning no matter how sweaty your hands become it wouldn’t spoil the experience.

The USB charging port, the volume and power buttons are protected with a thick rubbery lining. However, it is advisable to avoid using them in the rain as they are not water resistant.

My only complaint against the Free Rein Reflect is that listening to music may not be such a great experience. The treble and vocals are decent, but the bass is terrible. It definitely doesn’t give an experience that would satisfy an audiophile, but it gets the job done.

At Rs 2,999, they are a little pricey in my opinion, but they will finish first in a full marathon. The Free Rein Reflect comes with a carry case, extra ear tips and fins and USB cable.
