During the pandemic, one device that has eased countless lives is the webcam. Due to recent technological advancements and global events, their significance has only grown over the years. Today, there are thousands of webcams from various brands that offer an assortment of features, making it difficult for a consumer to pick one best suited for their needs. I have been using webcams for the past few years, and in the pandemic, they doubled as a device perfect for meetings and personal communication.

Recently, I got the chance to use the newly launched EPOS Expand Vision 1 webcam for a week. This is the first time I have experienced a webcam from EPOS, a brand that is known for offering premium audio and video solutions worldwide. When I was informed that I may have to review a webcam, I didn’t have the faintest idea of how the EPOS Expand Vision 1 would be in form, feel and substance.

First impressions

Frankly, I was very impressed with the packaging – a minimal pitch-black zip-case that evoked a sense of travel equipment. Once I opened the case, I was immediately struck by the webcam’s compact size and sleek design. I was expecting it to be bulky and wired. But, I was pleasantly surprised with the design. To my knowledge, this seems to be the smallest 4K, 30Hz webcam.

However, regardless of the nifty design, I had some trouble mounting it onto my laptop screen.
When it comes to functions, the device worked fairly well with most everyday tasks such as Zoom meetings and video chats. The ultra-high-definition video and exceptional voice pickup made my laptop’s stock camera seem from medieval Europe. Professionals who are frequent travellers would genuinely appreciate the quick and easy set-up. It also has an LED light that indicates when the camera is active.

Image quality and audio

The Expand Vision 1 is touted to be the ideal addition to one’s hybrid work setup. When operating remotely, the clarity of the image being transmitted matters a lot. In my experience, the 4K resolution does not disappoint. From dimly lit offices to sunlit rooms, the visuals come across crisp.

When it comes to audio, the dual noise-cancelling microphones are a standout. They capture clear audio without any interruptions. Talking about the audio/video quality, this is what my coworker said during a testing session – “The voice is loud and crisp, definitely better than what you get on a laptop mic.” The microphones on the webcam are effective at a range of up to three metres.

To me, however, the challenge was mostly when I tried to set up. The design, although aesthetically pleasing, was more about function than form. For, instance the clamp doesn’t necessarily extend as much as I wanted. It was wonky and felt like a balancing act on both my laptop and desktop.

One of the most noteworthy facets of the webcam is its shutter which can add to one’s privacy as one simply needs to shut it using the crown on top.

Verdict

The EPOS Expand Vision 1 is an efficient webcam that can be an ideal piece of equipment for one’s hybrid office environment. The device is light and easy to set up. If one can ignore the flat clamp with its shakiness, this can be a great addition. Moreover, with a 4K 30Hz camera and impeccable audio, this can be a great buy for those who do not wish to upgrade their laptops for a long time. The box comes with a webcam, a 1.2m USB-C 3.0 cable, a case and a safety guide.
