Apple on Tuesday sent invites for a June 5 event, where Cupertino is anticipated to launch its long-rumoured mixed-reality headset. In all probability, the announcement will be made at its WWDC 2023 keynote in person at the company’s Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California. The developer conference keynote starts at 10 a.m. PT (10:30 pm IST) on June 5. It will be streamed live on Apple’s website as well as its YouTube channel.

Why WWDC is important

Apple’s biggest event of the year, its World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC), is known for giving developers a platform so that they can build new applications for its products. Typically, Apple unveils the next version of the operating systems that run on its devices iOS (iPhone, iPads, iPod touch), macOS (Mac), watchOS (Apple Watch) and tvOS (Apple TV).

This year, Apple is coming up with a truly groundbreaking mixed-reality headset (which Apple has not publicly acknowledged, of course). The most significant news at WWDC this year could be the headset itself, and in all likelihood, Apple would want to show the device to developers first before making the product available to consumers. Not only would the upcoming mixed-reality headset blur the lines between Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented reality (AR), but it would also be the beginning of a new hardware era for Apple.

It is rumoured to be called Reality Pro and will offer both VR and AR experiences. According to Bloomberg, the headset could cost $3,000 and will reportedly be powered via a new magnetic connector attached to a MagSafe-style external battery pack.

What else can be expected from Apple?

Apple could also announce a new 15-inch MacBook Air at the event. It will reportedly have a larger 15-inch display but comes with the same M2 chip as the 13-inch Air. A bigger MacBook Air might complement the existing 13-inch MacBook Air model, according to some experts and insiders.
