(Image Source: Viber)Viber, the popular instant messaging app competing against WhatsApp and Telegram, is getting a new AI-powered feature that summarises unread group chats. The functionality uses technology from ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and offers a summary of the most important parts of the conversation in the form of bullet points.
To use the new AI-powered functionality, Viber users need to open a group chat with unread messages and then accept the prompt that lets them get a summary of what others are talking about. However, the AI-generated summary does not include any personally identifiable other than usernames, meaning specific parts of the chat cannot be linked to any member of the group.
It is really helpful if you don’t want to go through the hassle of going through a lengthy group conversation but need to know what was discussed. In the long run, the ability to get AI-powered summaries of conversations will help users save a considerable amount of time.

Moreover, Rakuten Viber says that these conversations or summaries are not stored on their servers and are only visible to those who request them. The company says the new AI summary feature will initially be limited to group chats and may expand to individual chats sometime later.
It is currently rolling out on both the Android and iOS versions of the app and will be available to those living in the US, Ukraine, Japan, Bulgaria, Poland and the Philippines with support for 50 languages. However, it is still unclear if and when the feature will be available to Indian users. Similar to WhatsApp, Viber also supports end-to-end encryption, meaning no one other than you and the recipient will be able to read the contents of the conversation.
