Indian media-tech venture Streambox Media has launched a new television called Dor that will come with its own subscription-based operating system called DorOS.
The 4K QLED TV does not come with a typical price tag. Instead, consumers have to pay an “activation fee” on purchasing the TV and will be charged a single, affordable subscription fee every month in order to access the OS that brings together all the content from multiple OTT apps and television channels as well as live channels, news, and gaming on one unified platform.
Dor TVs will be available in 43-inch, 55-inch, and 65-inch variants. The 43-inch TVs will go on sale in India on Flipkart and other retail outlets from December 1, 2024. “Every OTT app actually does a fabulous job of managing their content within their ecosystem. Can there be a platform that sits on top of everything and does the same for your home? That’s the core theme of DorOS,” Anuj Gandhi, the CEO of Streambox Media, said at the launch event in Mumbai on Tuesday, November 26.
The new offering which Streambox describes as “first-of-its-kind TV-as-a-service model in India” will come with more than 24 OTT apps pre-installed, including familiar names such as Prime Video, Jio Cinema, Disney Hotstar, YouTube, Sony LIV, Lionsgate Play, Zee 5, and more.
When asked about bringing Netflix to DorOS, Gandhi said that they have been “engaging actively” with the streaming giant.
“The integrated DorOS consolidates 24+ OTT apps alongside 300+ channels under a Single Sign-On & a Single Subscription, ensuring a seamless entertainment experience. This unified experience is further enhanced by Dor’s AI-powered search and discovery capabilities and intuitive navigation built on extensive knowledge graphs,” the company said in a press release.
Backed by Micromax, Streambox Media also counts Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath and Stride Ventures as investors. “If you see the whole OTT ecosystem right now, it’s very fragmented. Instead of that, we said why can’t we combine everything and make the whole interface as easy as ABC to use. This [Dor] is a real disruption in how users consume OTT content,” Rahul Sharma, the co-founder of Micromax, said at Tuesday’s event.
Dor TVs also come with Dolby Audio, a solar-powered remote control, and a spin-off app for viewing DorOS aggregated and personalised OTT content on-the-go.
The 43-inch variant of Dor TV costs Rs 10,799 upfront, including the activation fee and one month of subscription service.
Beyond the first month, the subscription fee for the TV will be Rs 799 per month till the end of the 12-month subscription period. Post this, one can opt for customised packages based on their viewing preferences, the company said.
Additionally, the television comes with a four-year warranty and is eligible for four DorOS software upgrades. The 55-inch and 65-inch subscription-based Dor TVs will only be available for purchase early next year.
