At the Snapdragon Summit 2025, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, its newest and most powerful flagship mobile chipset to date. Touted as the “world’s fastest mobile system-on-a-chip”, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the successor to last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and brings some significant performance improvements and new features.
Like its predecessor, the newly announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has an octa-core architecture that comprises of two prime cores with a maximum frequency of 4.6GHz, accompanied by six performance cores that peak at 3.62GHz. Built on TSMC’s 3nm process, Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is powered by the third-generation Oryon CPU, which it says offers 20 per cent more CPU performance and improves the power efficiency by 35 per cent.
According to Qualcomm, in Geekbench, it was noted that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 4 was on par with Apple’s A19 Pro in single-core performance, which made its debut on the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the iPhone Air, something that hasn’t happened in the last couple of years. It also surpassed competitors MediaTek Dimensity 9500 and Samsung Exynos 2600.
And while Qualcomm hasn’t revealed the name of the GPU, the chip maker did say that the new Adreno GPU delivers 23 per cent more performance alongside 20 per cent better power efficiency. The GPU gets a modest 25 per cent Ray-Tracing performance boost. Talking of gaming, Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 comes with Unreal Engine 5 support, which enables console-quality visuals alongside other technologies like Tile Memory Heap and Mesh Shading.
On the imaging front, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has Spectra AI ISP and is the world’s first mobile platform to get Advanced Professional Video codec support. This Samsung-backed codec seems to be the company’s answer to Apple’s ProRes.
Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation Hexagon NPU, which it claims is 37 per cent faster than the one on its predecessor. The chip maker also announced Qualcomm Personal Scribe and personal graph, which together give “recommendations and acts on your behalf based on your routines, preferences, and conversations.”
Several smartphone manufacturers have also announced their upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-powered flagship phones. For those wondering, the latest Qualcomm mobile chipset will be powering the likes of the OnePlus 15, Samsung Galaxy S26 series, iQOO 15, Xiaomi 17 series, realme GT8 Pro, vivo X300 Ultra and the Oppo Find X9 Ultra to name a few.
