OnePlus has confirmed that its first foldable device, the OnePlus Open, scheduled to be officially unveiled on October 19, will come preloaded with a few third-party apps, including Facebook. According to the official statement, this collaboration with mainstream developers aims to make their apps compatible with the new foldable form factor.

OnePlus prioritizes delivering a swift, smooth, and trouble-free customer experience above all else. For the introduction of the OnePlus Open, we’ve closely collaborated with various mainstream app developers to ensure their apps are compatible with our new foldable design, enhancing the user experience. This includes Facebook, a widely-used mobile app in our target markets. The work required significant effort from both parties, and we believe the results are not only significant but also extremely meaningful for our foldable device users.

To provide the best user experience, a small number of the mentioned applications will come pre-installed on the OnePlus Open. We believe this approach strikes the right balance between delivering a novel and seamless user experience while preserving the stability and security of our products.”

It’s worth noting that this is not the first time OnePlus has partnered with Facebook. In fact, this collaboration dates back to 2020 when the OnePlus 8 series and the OnePlus Nord were shipped with Facebook apps and services, with no direct option to remove them. This decision received criticism from its users. In response, the company issued a statement confirming that its successor OnePlus 8T would be free of Facebook-related services, with Netflix being the only third-party app pre-installed on the phone.

This time around, the situation is somewhat different. It is crucial for OnePlus to deliver a seamless social media user experience on its first foldable phone, and given that Facebook is one of the largest platforms, optimising it for the OnePlus Open is a positive step. Samsung has also worked with brands like Meta and Google to optimize their apps for its Flip and Fold smartphones.
