If you like to stay tuned in to your favourite music streaming service on the go or are often forced to take calls in noisy environments, there’s no smarter solution than getting yourself a pair of nifty neckband earphones. This handy gadget hangs snugly around your neck and is always within easy reach. In fact, they may be more accessible than any other audio device.

However, with a thriving wearables market in India, there are so many options that even the biggest tech nerds might get confused. So, before you rush to buy one, make sure you check out this buying guide to find the best neckband earphones for your preferences and budget.

Sound quality matters

Sound quality is paramount when choosing neckband earphones. Look for devices with high-definition audio, preferably with support for codecs like aptX, LDAC, or at the very least, AAC. These codecs support higher bitrates, meaning more data is used to represent the audio, resulting in detailed sound with punchy bass and crisp trebles.

Check comfort and fit

People tend to buy neckbands off the internet, but if you have the luxury of getting an in-hand feel, look for ergonomic designs with flexible materials that sit comfortably around your neck. Thicker cables last longer, for instance.

The neckband should be comfortable for prolonged wear. Ensure the earbuds fit securely in your ears to prevent them from falling out during your workouts or daily activities. If your friend owns the neckband you’re looking to buy, try them on and move your neck around to see if they stay put.

And if you are a physically active user, try to look for neckbands with water and sweat resistance. While there are no devices in the market offering dandy IP68 water resistance, a rating like IP55 or IP54 should offer basic protection against the elements – unless, of course, you plan to go swimming.

Ensure battery life that keeps the music flowing

Nobody likes their tunes to be cut short. Check the battery life of the neckband earphones, especially if you plan on using them for extended periods. A good neckband earphone should offer at least 20 hours of playback on a single charge. But it can go all the way up to 40 hours. Also consider quick charging features to get you back in action faster.

Additionally, make sure the earphones have a USB Type-C charging port so that you can charge your earphones with the same cable you charge your phone with.

Check Bluetooth version and USB standard

Check for the connectivity options. The difference may not always be noticeable but Bluetooth 5.0 or higher is preferred for stable connections and better range. Some neckband earphones also offer multi-device pairing, allowing you to seamlessly switch between devices. If your pick supports that, try to check if the neckband has a dedicated button for faster device switching.

Do you need noise cancellation?

Contrary to what people may think, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) isn’t a TWS earbuds-exclusive feature. Noise-cancelling technology has also made it to neckband earphones, sometimes offering to cut out as much as 45dB of noise. If you often take calls and listen to music in noisy environments, try to look for any mention of ANC to enjoy a more immersive experience. Just be prepared to pay a bit more for this feature.

Certain brands may try to bamboozle you into thinking that their earphones support ANC by using terms like ‘AI noise cancellation’ or ‘ENC,’ but those are completely different things, so beware.

Mic quality is important too

If you plan on making calls with your neckband earphones, make sure they have a good-quality built-in microphone. Noise-cancelling microphones help eliminate background noise and provide clear voice transmission.

Winding up

Before making a decision, research the brand’s reputation and read user reviews. Trusted brands often provide better customer support and product quality. Real-world user experiences can offer valuable insights into the performance and durability of the earphones.

Also note that while it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, consider the value you’re getting for your money. Sometimes, spending a bit more can get you better sound quality, durability, and features that enhance your overall experience.
