Foldable phones are all the rage at tech conferences these days. Motorola is aiming to stand out from the crowd with its new Adaptive Display concept phone, unveiled at MWC 2024. This Android device takes the foldable premise to new heights with its versatility and shape-shifting abilities.
Rather than simply folding in half like a book, the Adaptive Display can bend into a variety of forms to suit different needs. Its most novel trick is the ability to wrap around the wrist as a 6.9-inch smartwatch.
Motorola suggests this wrist mode could pair nicely with one of its AI-powered outfit-matching wallpapers for a fashionable look. We’ve seen similar smart accessorizing in Samsung’s ecosystem.
For a more ergonomic viewing experience, the Adaptive Display can also bend the top half upward, creating a curved 4.6-inch display perfectly sized for scrolling social feeds or video calls. The back is covered in fabric, aiming for comfort during these contortions.
The bending mechanics also allow the phone to form a kickstand shape. This self-standing position gives hands-free access for watching videos on the 6.9-inch screen.
As a concept device, pricing and availability remain theoretical. Durability, wearable comfort, and real-world functionality also raise questions about this vision. We’ll have to stay tuned if this shapeshifting phone someday hits consumer shelves or remains a tech conference pipe dream.
