Microsoft has announced that a part of its Edge browser will be made open source. The code will be published to GitHub in January 2016, which is next month.
In a blogpost, Microsoft’s Gaurav Sethi and Adalberto Foresti wrote, that the company will open-source “the core components of Chakra as ChakraCore, which will include all the key components of the JavaScript engine powering Microsoft Edge.”
Microsoft says that they expect ChakraCore to be used for cloud-based services to IoT and beyond as it offers “best-in-class JavaScript execution” along with “dependable performance, reliability, and scalability.”
The blogpost goes on to say, “We’re investing more than ever in improving Chakra, and are excited to team up with our community to drive further improvements. In addition to the public, several organizations have already expressed interest in contributing to ChakraCore—among many others, we look forward to working with Intel, AMD, and NodeSource as we develop this community.”
Microsoft has rolled out the Edge browser with Windows 10.
