Microsoft Teams, one of the most popular collaboration and communication apps used by both individuals and organisations worldwide will soon be getting threads and a new redesigned user interface that combines chats and channels.

According to The Verge, threaded conversations will be coming sometime in mid-2025, while the combined channels and chats view will be rolling out in public preview next month. In a statement to the publication Jeff Teper, the president of collaborative apps and platforms at Microsoft said that the redesigned chat and channels experience will “simplify your digital workspace by bringing chats, teams and channels into one place under Chat” and make it easy to integrate “both chat and channels into your critical workflows” by offering quick access to your conversations.

This means users will no longer have to switch between separate sections to check their messages from individual or group chats. The company is also working on the ability to set up custom sections where that allow users to group conversations and projects. Similar to WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams is also getting a new favourites section where all pinned chats and channels will be visible.

Microsoft said it is also adding an option that lets you choose if you want to see message previews, organise all channels in a single list and see the timestamps. Moreover, the app is also getting a new @mentions view, which, as the name suggests, lets you quickly check the conversations where you are mentioned in chats or channels. The new features will be coming to both desktop and mobile versions of the app in a public preview next month, while the Android and iOS versions of Teams will get these features sometime later.

In August this year, Microsoft announced that it is unifying the Teams app, allowing users to sign in to their education, personal and work accounts without having to install two different version of the app.
