If Microsoft brings AI Copilot to Windows 10, it might incentivize developers to make more plug-ins since the majority of users are still using Microsoft's older operating system.

Microsoft is reportedly working to bring the Windows 11 AI Copilot features to Windows 10 users along with several ‘select new features and services.’ The move might help the tech giant reach around 1 billion users who are still using Windows 10.

According to a report by Windows Central’s Zac Bowden citing sources, Microsoft will add a Copilot button to the Windows 10 taskbar. Clicking on the button will open the same Copilot sidebar interface as Windows 11.

Bowden goes on to say that one of the major reasons why Microsoft is bringing AI-powered capabilities to Windows 10 is market share. Compared to Windows 11’s 40 million users, the previous version of Windows is used by around 1 billion people worldwide. This makes sense since the majority of Windows users are yet to get their hands on AI Copilot.

Announced at the Build 2023, Copilot AI is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model and lets users perform tasks like changing the system theme, adjusting volume, and understanding the context of a page. Users can also ask Copilot to summarise the webpage if they are using Edge.

If AI Copilot comes to Windows 10, it might also incentivize developers to make more plugins for the platform. The report also claims that AI Copilot will offer the same functionalities as its Windows 11 counterpart with Microsoft planning to port more features to the older OS.

When asked if Microsoft will continue supporting Windows 10 after October 2025, Bowden’s sources said that internal discussions are currently going on but a decision hasn’t been made. Moreover, it is still unclear when Microsoft will bring AI Copilot to its older OS.
