Meta on Tuesday launched a new “Know What’s Real” campaign aiming to drive awareness about the importance of fighting misinformation. The company will try to use the campaign to educate about how to identify and address misinformation on WhatsApp and Instagram.
“Meta is committed to fighting misinformation online. We have invested in industry leading programs like setting up a robust network of independent fact-checkers that work to debunk false claims and help citizens access reliable information, including collaborating with MCA to launch a WhatsApp tipline to curb AI-generated misinformation. The campaign is an extension of our ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation and serves as a simple safety guide to educate people on the role they can play to combat it,” said Shivnath Thukral, Director, Public Policy India, Meta, in a press statement.
Meta will team up with fact-checkers to very information. If they finding something like a deepfake, they will put warning labels on the app to tell people that it is not real. Meta will also limit the reach of content that is labelled as false by fact checkers so that less people see it. The company wants to encourage people to report misinformation to the Grievance Officer or its independent fact-checking partners to verify information.
The Mark Zuckerberg-led social media giant’s fact-checking program in India works with 11 independent fact checking organisations with the capability to verify content in 15 Indian languages and English.
