The total solar eclipse coming on April 8 is causing a frenzy online and Google is joining in on the fun. The company has dropped a new animation that teases the celestial phenomenon right from the search bar.
By searching phrases like “solar eclipse 2024”, “April 8 eclipse”, or simply “solar eclipse”, a graphic will appear showing the moon passing directly in front of the sun. The animation displays the moon’s silhouette crossing over the sun’s bright disk.
It’s a simplified representation of the celestial alignment that only parts of the United States, Mexico and Canada will witness as a total eclipse. The Moon will cover just some portions of the Sun in a partial eclipse visible across parts of the Caribbean, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, and Iceland. Unfortunately, there will be no eclipse visible to anyone in India or anywhere else in Asia.
Of course, the animation is just one of Google’s many casual Easter eggs on Search. A couple of other fun ones you can try is searching “do a barrel roll” which sends results spinning, while “flip a coin” and “roll dice” offer randomisers.
