Samsung is at the forefront of foldable smartphone technology, and it took almost half a decade for the competition to catch up with the Korean tech giant. 2023 is proving to be a year of revelation, as major Android OEMs are jumping on the fold and flip bandwagon, making foldables mainstream by making them accessible.

With the growing competition from Chinese smartphone makers, Samsung is gearing up to launch two new foldable phones including a new flip-style Galaxy Z Flip 5 on July 26.

Here’s everything we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 including its design and hardware.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 design

Samsung’s Z Flip series of foldable devices haven’t seen a major revamp since the first iteration. Incepted back in 2020, most additions in this lineup can be considered iterative upgrades. This is changing with the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

According to a report by Ross Young, Samsung is using a re-engineered hinge on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to minimise the gap when folded. It is also said that the new hinge system on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is similar to the one on the Oppo Find N2 Flip, which does have a very minimal gap when folded.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 leaked renders indicate that the device will be available in at least four colours — Lavender, Mint, Cream, and Graphite. We could also expect the company to launch some exclusive colour options at a later date.

The last two generations of Samsung foldable have been water resistant with IPX8, and according to a report, with the new hinge system, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is speculated to get an official dust resistance rating, which will make it the first foldable smartphone with both water and dust resistance certification. However, a report from SnoopyTech debunks this theory, stating the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will continue to offer just an IPX8 water resistance rating with no dust resistance updates.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 display

Another significant update on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is said to be the cover display. Unlike the compact 1.9-inch cover display on the Z Flip 4, the upcoming iteration is said to pack a bigger 3.4-inch cover display, similar to the one on the recently announced Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, albeit, with a different shape. With the bigger cover display, a user should be able to access more features and services without opening the smartphone.

Similarly, the primary display is also expected to receive some major upgrades, and, according to SnoopyTech, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will have a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 120Hz refresh rate display with variable refresh rate technology to enhance power efficiency. With the new hinge technology, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also said to feature a less visible crease when compared to the Z Flip 4.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 hardware

Samsung is said to further elevate the performance of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Despite being almost a year old, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is almost as capable as the competition. However, with the Z Flip 5, Samsung will further push the envelope when it comes to performance with the flagship chip.

The same SnoopyTech report also suggests that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be available in multiple SKUs, with double the internal storage on the base model (256 GB) when compared to the Z Flip 4. Similarly, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also expected to come with a 512 GB storage option.

The Z Flip 5 is also reported to offer dual 12 MP cameras with a dedicated ultra-wide angle lens and then a 10 MP selfie camera. The report also suggests that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will continue to offer a 3,700 mAh battery like its predecessor and the phone is said to support fast wired and wireless charging. While the camera and battery remain identical to its predecessor, a report from Korean outlet Chosun suggests that Samsung has achieved camera and battery improvements with software optimisations.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 software

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is likely to ship with OneUI 5.1 based on Android 13 OS. A report by SamMobiles suggests that the Z Flip 5 will be the most compact smartphone to support Samsung Dex, which allows users to connect the phone to an external display to use it like a computer.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 pricing

Despite doubling the storage, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is said to cost similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 4, where the entry-level variant could be priced at $999 in the US, and the same could cost Rs 89,990 in India. The device is already up for pre-order via Samsung.com with some exciting pre-launch offers for early adopters.
