Figure AI, a startup working on humanoid robots, has unveiled Figure 03 – which it says is “a general-purpose humanoid robot for everyday. Designed for the ‘home and the world’ at scale, it can do a wide range of tasks like watering plants, tidying up a room, serving food, washing dishes and folding clothes.

The California-based company’s newest humanoid robot features a “fully redesigned sensory suite and hand system” and “next generation vision system engineered for high-frequency visuomotor control”, which gives it an edge over the previous generation humanoids. Figure AI says this is possible thanks to a new camera architecture that helps double frame rates, reduce the latency to one-fourth and offers a 60 per cent wider field of view.

The new and improved hardware, when combined with the expanded depth of field, helps Figure 03 intelligently navigate and operate in “complex, cluttered spaces” like homes. The company says its newest humanoid robot also comes with an integrated palm camera that offers close-range visual feedback when trying to grasp objects, something that helps with working in confined spaces like cabinets.

Talking about hands, Figure 03 features” softer, more adaptive fingertips” that offer more surface contact area and help grasp objects of various shapes and sizes. To give you an idea, each sensor embedded in the fingertip can detect forces as small as three grams of pressure, which means the humanoid can even feel items like a paperclip.

Another area where Figure 03 differs from the competition is that it can continuously learn and improve from humans. The robot sees and executes actions using Helix, Figure AI’s in-house developed AI-powered system that helps it perform actions in real-time without having to follow a script.

Figure AI was previously using OpenAI’s models, but the company said it has ditched them in favour of its proprietary technology. In a demo video, Figure 03 can be seen doing everyday chores like picking up a cup and a dish from the living room and taking it to the kitchen sink for washing. For those wondering, the humanoid robot stands at 5 ft 8 inches and weighs 61 kg.

For those wondering, the humanoid robot charges itself by standing on a wireless stand and runs up to 5 hours on a single charge. Talking about availability and price, the company has revealed if and when Figure 03 will go on sale and how much it will cost, but it did note that the new model will have a “lower manufacturing cost” than its predecessor.

In a statement to Time magazine, Figure AI CEO and founder Brett Adcock said that they want the robot to be able to do “most things in your home, autonomously, all day… We’re not there yet. We think we can get there in 2026, but it’s a big push.”
