At the Computex 2024 event held in Taipei, Taiwan on Monday, AMD introduced its next-generation Zen 5 CPU architecture and XDNA 2 GPU NPU architecture, powering the all-new AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors for gaming PCs, and the company’s third-generation Ryzen AI processors for ultrabooks.
AMD has introduced its third-generation processors for AI PC with a dedicated NPU with up to 50 trillions of operations per second (TOPs) to enable on-device AI experiences like recall (Copilot+), real-time translation, live caption, and co-create.
The Ryzen AI 300 series includes an all-new XDNA 2 neural processing unit (NPU) with up to 50 TOPs of performance, a 12-core central processing unit (CPU), and a new graphics processing unit (GPU) based on RDNA 3.5 architecture with up to 16 compute units on the flagship AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.
The Ryzen AI 9 365 will offer the same AI performance but will come with 10 CPU cores, which will be powering upcoming Copilot+ PCs requiring a processor with minimum AI performance of 40 TOPs.
Compared to Qualcomm X Elite, the upcoming Intel Lunar Lake AI processors, and the Apple M4, the latest Ryzen AI processor has a more capable AI processor with up to 50 TOPs and is based on 16-bit instruction, which does not require any quantisation.
Laptops powered by the Ryzen AI 300 series processors will be available starting July 2024 from over 100 platform partners, which includes Copilot+ PCs and AI+ PCs from MSI.
The new Ryzen 9000 series of desktop processors are based on the AM5 platform with support for technologies like PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 with up to 16 per cent instruction per core (IPC) improvement compared to the AMD Zen 4 processors.
The lineup includes the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X processor with 16 cores/32 threads with up to 5.7 GHz clock speed, all within a thermal design power (TPD) of 170W. Compared to the Intel Core i9-14900K, the Ryzen 9 9950X is said to have a higher graphics bandwidth, and AI acceleration capability with up to 56 per cent higher performance on benchmarks like Blender, and up to 23 per cent more frame rate while gaming.
There will be three more SKUs––Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 9700X, and the Ryzen 9600X––and these processors will be available in the market starting July 2024.
AMD has also introduced two new processors within the Ryzen 5000 series – the Ryzen 9 5900XT and the Ryzen 7 5800XT which will ship with an AMD Wraith Prism Cooler.
