Apple has finally cracked the code on how to update iPhones to the latest version of iOS, especially when they are sitting still at a store. Apple has started deploying new equipment called Presto at select Apple Stores in the US, which can automatically update the iPhones to the latest iOS version, in just 15 minutes.

Presto is said to be NFC-based equipment, where, when an iPhone box is placed on top of the machine, it can read the details of the device and update it to the latest version of iOS wirelessly. According to a report by iGeneration, the machine looks like a toaster, and a single device can accommodate up to six iPhones at once.

To begin the operation, the iPhone box has to be aligned properly, which is said to take around 20 seconds. Once placed, the machine will take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes to update the iPhone to the latest stable version of iOS.

This means that when a user buys a new iPhone, especially one which has been manufactured a few months before, they don’t have to spend over 20 minutes updating it to the latest version before using the device. On top of that, this also means Apple will be able to fix bugs and improve security by pushing the software update even to unopened devices. Right now, the technology is limited to the US, and in the coming days, Apple will further expand the Presto iPhone software update technology to other markets.
