On Monday, Apple introduced the updated iMac, powered by the M4 chip along with new accessories such as the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad, all featuring a USB-C port. As Greg Joswiak, Apple’s SVP of Marketing, recently confirmed, this is the first update from “an exciting week of announcements,” and is also the first Mac to be powered by the latest M4 chip, which debuted with the launch of the latest generation of iPad Pro.
The base variant of the new iMac, powered by an M4 chip with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 16 GB of RAM, starts at Rs 1,34,900, while the slightly more powerful iMac based on the M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU is priced at Rs 1,54,900. Both models can be further customised with up to 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage and will be available for pre-order starting today and will be available for purchase starting November 8.
Apple calls the M4-powered iMac the “world’s best all-in-one for AI,” which looks almost identical to its predecessor, featuring the M3 chip. Besides the new chip, the latest all-in-one Mac from Apple also includes a 12MP Center Stage camera and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity for fast data transfer and additional monitor support.
This is also one of the first machines from Cupertino to ship with Apple Intelligence out-of-the-box, which includes capabilities like new ChatGPT-powered Siri and AI writing tools. A software update will also be available for existing Macs featuring Apple Silicon, which will introduce Apple Intelligence across iMac, Mac mini, MacBook, and Mac Pro.
The latest iMac is available in seven colour options — green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver, and according to John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, “The new iMac changes the game once again with the incredible features of Apple Intelligence and the powerful performance of Apple silicon M4.”
Compared to the M1 iMac, the latest M4 iMac is up to 1.7x faster and delivers up to 2.1x faster gaming performance. Besides, the base model now packs at least 16 GB of RAM, configurable up to 32 GB, and it is also said to be 4.5x faster than the most popular Intel-powered 24-inch all-in-one PC. The latest iMac, featuring a 24-inch high-resolution screen, now comes with a new nano-texture glass option, which was previously limited to the expensive Apple Studio Display.
All four USB-C ports on the new iMac are compliant with the Thunderbolt 4 standard, while it also retains a 3.5mm headphone jack on the left side.
The new iMac will be accompanied by a colour-matching Magic Mouse, Keyboard, and Trackpad, which now come with a USB-C port for charging.
