Airtel services were restored shortly after the telecom network experienced an outage on Monday afternoon, August 18, with several users reporting that they were unable to make phone calls or access mobile internet.
Based on the timing of the user reports, the outage seems to have begun at around 3:30 pm IST on Friday. However, the outage appears to have been short lived.
A majority of users (73 per cent) reported facing issues with both voice and data service, while another 15 per cent of users reported not receiving a signal on their phones and 12 per cent users reported not being able to access the internet via mobile data, as per Downdetector, an outage tracker that mostly relies on user reports and crowdsourced data.
A total of 3,600 people submitted reports to Downdetector about being impacted by the outage. Based on Airtel India’s response, it appears that the downtime was limited to users in the Delhi-NCR region.
“Our customers from Delhi-NCR are experiencing some voice calling issues for the past hour or so. Significant part of the issue has already been resolved and our engineers are at work to resolve this fully. We deeply regret any inconvenience,” an Airtel spokesperson told The Indian Express in a statement.
A small number of Jio and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) users had also reported facing issues with their respective telecom service provider.
Based on user reports, the Jio outage seems to have begun at roughly the same time as the Airtel network disruption, as per Downdetector. Most of the Jio users (around 52 per cent) appear to be experiencing issues with the telco’s mobile internet services, with 30 per cent users reporting an outage of Jio Fiber, and 17 per cent users stating that they are not able to receive a signal on their phones.
Vodafone-Idea (Vi) users, on the other hand, reported that mobile internet services have been largely affected. The Vi outage appears to be spread across several parts of the country including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Jaipur, and Kolkata.
