Facebook-owned WhatsApp had earlier said it will end support for its app for BlackBerry and Nokia’s Symbian operating systems by the end of 2016 (December 31). Now, the company has started notifying users of the same.
Reports say Symbian users all over the world have started getting a notification which says, “Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use WhatsApp after 31/12/2016 because WhatsApp will no longer support your phone.”
WhatsApp put out a blogpost early this year saying it will do away with WhatsApp Messenger for Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, smartphones with Android 2.1, Android 2.2 and Windows Phone 7.1.
WhatsApp is shutting down its support for these mobile devices as they no longer ‘offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future’, according to the blog post.
Blackberry itself has dropped BB10 in favour of Android and this move from WhatsApp just makes it clear that there is no life for BB10 devices.
WhatsApp has come a long way, since it was launched in 2010. The social messaging platform is now end-to-end encrypted, which means no third-party can read or listen in to the conversations. It has added a host of new features like the ability to share documents, text formatting; and is reportedly looking to add GIF support to its iOS app.
WhatsApp is also working on a video-calling feature, which was earlier spotted in an Android beta build, but later taken off. BlackBerry and Symbian users will have to update to new devices to continue using WhatsApp.
