Twitter has abandoned Periscope from its Q2 earnings call, will rather be using audio only session
Twitter last year started live streaming its earnings calls via Periscope as a way to promote one of its own products but that is all to set change this year. Twitter has confirmed it won’t be live streaming the Q2 earnings call this Tuesday.
Periscope is a live video streaming platform for iOS and Android developed by Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Bernstein. Twitter acquired Periscope before its launch in 2015. Twitter acquired Periscope after rival Meerkat started gaining traction among Twitter users. Since then, Periscope has seen its fair share of use among major Twitter users.
Twitter recently built Periscope right into its standalone app to facilitate users going live. Twitter recently tied up with NBA and NFL to bring more live streaming content but has apparently stopped one of its own production.
Twitter’s live streaming platform has been challenged by Facebook Live feature which has gained traction among celebrities and media organisations. Facebook has been pushing its live platform by showing live videos more than the saved streams. Facebook has also been able to use the popular NewsFeed in its favour to push more live videos thus engaging more audience with live videos.
The biggest reason, however, to pick Facebook Live could be its 1.6 billion user base which is far ahead of Twitter. Twitter’s story otherwise is worrying too with new CEO Jack trying to bring turnaround.
Twitter is currently facing competition from Facebook and its other products like Instagram. Meanwhile Snapchat is building its own arsenal to pip Twitter as the most used social platform.
