Telegram, the go-to instant messaging app for millions worldwide is rolling out the first update of the year, which brings several new features like a built-in QR code scanner, collectable gifts that you can send or transfer to others, filters for messages and more. Here’s a quick look at the latest Telegram update.
Telegram lets users quickly find messages they are looking for using the search bar, but sometimes the results may not be enough to find the right message. With the new update, Telegram has added what it calls “extra filters” which let you refine messages depending on whether they are from a private chat, group chat or channel.
Available on both Android and iOS versions of the app, Telegram can now quickly scan QR codes and open the links in the browser of your choice. This is really helpful as users will no longer have to switch between apps. To use the new feature, open Telegram, swipe right from the main screen and tap on the camera icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Telegram already allows users to create chat folders to keep things organised, but until now, you could only use characters to name them. However, with the latest update, Telegram says folder names now support custom emojis, but it looks like the functionality is currently limited for Premium subscribers.
Similar to Instagram, X and Facebook, Telegram lets public figures and organisations get a verification badge. Now, the app is introducing the ability to use official third-party services, which will be able to assign “extra verification icons” for chats and accounts.
Telegram says the new decentralized platform will help reduce scams and fight against misinformation, which is quite common on instant messaging and social media platforms.
If a chat or account is verified by a third party, you will see a small logo before their name, tapping on it will show you a detailed explanation of what it means.
The new update also allows users to react to service messages that appear in a conversation, allowing them to quickly say thanks or welcome new members in a group. To give you a quick recap, service messages also appear when someone calls you, changes their display picture or applies a new chat background.
Gifts that you get on Telegram can now be upgraded to Collectibles, which can then be further transferred to other users or even auctioned at NFT marketplaces. Apart from the ability to change the appearance, collectables will also have a “random set of secondary traits” like a background colour, icon and number.
