Super Mario Run is Nintendo’s first big mobile game, and the app is already topping the charts on the App Stores across the world. According to data from AppAnnie, Super Mario Run had over 20 million pre-registrations before the launch, and data shows the game crossed “over 10 million downloads and over $4 million in consumer spend worldwide on December 15.”
AppAnnie’s data also shows that by December 16, Super Mario Run was the highest grossing game in the US, UK and at number six position in Japan’s App Store. Of course, the comparison with Pokemon GO phenomena is already taking place for Super Mario Run, but it should be remembered that Pokemon Go launched on both Android and iOS, and was slowly rolled out for more countries. Also the latter is a game around AR, geo-tagging data, and one that went viral across the world with people hitting the streets to play this game in their hunt for Pokemon.
Super Mario Run went live in 151 countries in one go, but for now is restricted to the Apple App Store. Plus users have to pay $9.99 or Rs 620 in India in order to play the full game, and has a freemium model. So while the game is free to download, you will need to pay more eventually if you want to play all the levels. In contrast, Pokemon GO, which crossed over 100 million downloads (Google Play Store and iOS combined) in a little over a month after it launched, is a free game with in-app purchases.

According to AppAnnie in Mario’s case, the “revenue is more likely to be concentrated early on in the game’s lifecycle.” The app analytics firm also says the game’s progress will be interesting to watch, and whether it can convince the non-Mario fans to join in as well will be another crucial factor to its success.
In India, Super Mario Run is already the top grossing app on the App Store, which is not surprising at all, given the level of interest in this game. Let’s not forget that Pokemon GO also arrived officially in India this month, and is now the number three app in the list of top charts on the App Store, just after Super Mario Run and Paytm.
For Super Mario Run, the real boost is likely to come when the Android version of the game is rolled out. Nintendo has said not yet announced a final date for this, but it will come in 2017.
