“Snapchat is one of the most exciting young companies in the world,” Hamby said in an interview on Monday morning. “They have a big and growing audience, and we’ve seen Discover is a huge success. Hiring a seasoned reporter like Hamby is being regarded within media circles as a wise move after Buzzfeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith made a similar switch in 2011.

The application has been sitting on a mine of user generated content and will be now able to leverage this with the ‘Snapchat Stories’ feature that allows users to create stories with video clips.

Snapchat is already curating content provided by its partners to showcase the best stories of the day under the “Discover” section. The company has also been able to monetise it by displaying adds inside the news stories.
