Reddit has added a new feature that allows users to translate posts into eight different languages. The feature is available on Reddit’s iOS or Android apps or on the web while logged out, according to a post from a Reddit admin. The languages supported are English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and Swedish. To use the feature, users can simply tap or click on the “Translate” link at the top left of any post. The translation will appear below the original text, and users can switch back to the original language by tapping or clicking on the “Original” link. Reddit says it is using Google services for translations in a manner consistent with its privacy policy. The admin also notes that the feature is still in beta and may not work perfectly for all posts. Users are encouraged to report any issues or feedback through Reddit’s help center. The translation feature is not yet available for comments, but Reddit says it has started experimenting with translating comments on iOS and Android. The admin writes that “soon, your entire conversation experience on Reddit can be multilingual!” In addition to the translation feature, Reddit also reminds users that it is about to deprecate its previous coins system, which allowed users to give awards to other users for their posts or comments. The last day coins will work is Tuesday, September 12th, and Reddit has already removed the ability to give awards on the Old Reddit design and on the mobile desktop experience. Reddit has not revealed what will replace the coins system, but some reports suggest that it may involve turning gold or Reddit karma into real money.
