Facebook will now send you encrypted emails.

Facebook has announced that it will supported encrypted emails for users via OpenPGP standard tools. According to post,which was shared on the company’s ‘Protecting the Graph’ page, the new feature will encrypt emails that Facebook sends about account alerts, notifications, friend requests, etc.

What this new email encryption does is that your email service provider such as Gmail which typically scan inboxes for content, won’t be able read the contents of that message. To read the email, users will need a key.

According to the post, the company is also “gradually rolling out an experimental new feature that enables people to add OpenPGP public keys to their profile.” Once you add keys, they can then be used “to ‘end-to-end’ encrypt notification emails sent from Facebook to your preferred email accounts,” says the company.

Additionally users can also share their “OpenPGP keys from their profile” and Facebook will share this as part of your contact info, to allow other users to send you an encrypted email.

The advantage of this is that it will allow emails to be sent while maintaining the user’s anonymity. Facebook also launched Tor version of the site last October for users who wish to remain anonymous. You will need a Tor-enabled browser to access the site.
