Apple’s ‘Awe Dropping’ event was primarily about the iPhone Air, the thinnest iPhone ever. But there were a few other interesting announcements at the event that could impact iPhone users and the smartphone segment in the coming months. Here are the announcements that impressed me the most.
1: iPhone Air is super sturdy: Apple’s thinnest phone ever is a really stunning, not only because it is thin and light, but also because it is maybe the sturdiest iPhone ever built. A thin phone would always be susceptible to ‘bendgate’ threats, and this is why Apple has put in extra effort to ensure this phone can take a bit of bending come back to shape after this pressure if released. It is also impressive that iPhone Air will come with the top-end processor and not the same silicon as the iPhone 17, suggesting a new segment in a way that is more Pro than base model.
2: AirPods Pro 3 feels different: The new AirPods Pro are different and you feel it as soon as you wear them. Instead of the silicone tips, they now have tips made of a new material that has silicone and foam. This works well when it comes to keeping out sound improving the noise cancellation dramatically. However, this also means the new tips are not like anything you have experienced before and will take some getting used to. That said, this audio experience is improved and the improved noise cancellation only makes it better.
3: Bloodpressure monitor is hardware enabled: The blood pressure monitoring feature on Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3 requires two key components working together: the SIP (system in package) and the sensors on the back. The system works by measuring blood flow and the reaction of blood flow within the body, then uses a machine learning model to find signals of chronic hypertension over a 30-day window. This feature is hence unlikely to be available on older models.
4: The Pro models are much cooler: The vapour chamber cooling system in the iPhone 17 Pro models now enables 40% better sustained performance. The A19 Pro chip has now been repositioned to the center from side with the vapour chamber laser-welded directly above it. Plus, the heat is now conducted to the aluminum on the sides for even distribution. This is particularly useful for gaming performance where a high, long and sustained performance is demanded.
5: Live translation works offline: The live translation feature on the new AirPods Pro is a combination of hardware and tech prowess of Apple. While the feature captures the communication intent and not just words it is capable of handling complex languages like German. This works even offline with the phone still in your pocket.
