The Samsung Galaxy Z tri-fold will most likely fold inwards instead of outwards. (Image Source: Dailian)A few months ago, Samsung’s smartphone chief, TM Roh, confirmed that the company is developing a tri-fold phone similar to Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Edition, with plans to launch it by the end of 2025.
Now, Samsung appears to be showcasing the so-called “Galaxy Z Trifold” at a side event of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). According to a machine-translated report by the South Korean publication Dailian, the tri-fold phone was on display at the Samsung Electronics booth at the ‘K-Tech Showcase’, which was held at the Air Dome of Gyeongju Expo Park in Gyeongbuk-do.
As you can see in the video below, the Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold features a large, continuous display with a ‘dual infolding’ mechanism that opens into a G-shaped structure, unlike the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Edition’s Z shape. However, the prototype on display did not show the folds.
While Samsung is yet to share details about the inner display’s size, rumour has it that the phone can be unfolded to unveil a huge 10-inch screen. The report goes on to say that the South Korean phone maker will be disclosing more information at the official launch, which is scheduled for late November or early December.
According to Android Authority, the left-most rear panel will house a triple camera setup, which might look like the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The middle panel is said to pack in the front-facing camera, while the right-most panel won’t have anything.
This aligns with a previous leak from a One UI 8 beta build, which hinted that the Galaxy G Fold moniker could feature inward-folding hinges, where the left panel folds inward and the right panel folds over the top. Like Huawei, Samsung may also caution users against folding the right panel completely flat, as the protruding camera module might prevent it from folding flat and cause damage.
The Galaxy Z Trifold is expected to cost somewhere around 3 million won, which roughly translates to Rs 1.84 lakh, but if it comes to India, expect it to cost more than Rs 2 lakh.
