It’s the end of an era, the 7-inch Nexus tablet from Google is no longer available on the Google Store for purchase. When you go to the Nexus 7 page on the Google Store, it reads that the tablet is now off sales.

What is available is the Google Nexus 9 tablet which has a bigger 8.9-inch screen. The Google Nexus 9 costs Rs 28,900 on the official Google Store for Devices.

The Nexus 7 (2013) tablet, which was often rated as one of the best Google tablets in the market, was priced at Rs 20,999 for 16 GB version, Rs 23,999 for 32GB.  Interestingly Flipkart still has the 32GB version retailing for Rs 15,999 for those who are still considering a new tablet.

Most recently the Nexus 7 had got the update to the Android Lollipop version of the OS. Some of the new features on the list were improved notifications, Bluetooth smart, personal unlocking,

In the new ‘heads-up notifications’ users can respond to notifications without leaving the current app.  Bluetooth Smart is low-energy Bluetooth mode that extends Nexus 7 battery life when scanning for and pairing with nearby devices.

The ‘personal unlocking’ feature, designates certain locations such as home and work as ‘safe’ and thus Nexus 7 users are able to bypass the normal locked screen.

The end of the 7-inch tablet from Google is likely to leave some users disappointed but no doubt this was a step coming soon. With smartphone screens getting bigger and bigger (Nexus 6 has a 6-inch-screen), for users the worth of a 7-inch tablet had decreased significantly.

As smartphone canabilise the mini-tablet screen space, don’t expect any more 7-inch tablets to get launched.
