At CES 2024, Lenovo unveiled the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid, a new laptop that can seamlessly switch between Windows and Android. While the market is already full of laptops that can also double up as tablets, the latest from Lenovo is one of the few machines that combines the best of both worlds in a single package.
When attached to the base, it runs on Windows 11 but as soon you detach it, it turns into an Android tablet. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid features a 14.-inch 2.8K OLED screen.
This is not the first time Lenovo has tried something like this. In 2011, the company launched the IdeaPad U1, a laptop that used a Qualcomm chip and ran on both Windows and Android. Unlike the IdeaPad U1, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid packs an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor in the base with the Android part of the laptop powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset.
The base, which also houses the keyboard comes with 32GB RAM and a 1TB SSD whereas the tablet offers 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The tablet runs on Android 13 out of the box and packs a 38Wh battery with the Windows mode offering a 75Wh battery. In terms of weight, the tablet weighs 1.5 pounds, making it a tad heavier than the iPad Pro.
A report by The Verge suggests that the software does not offer seamless connectivity, as these are two separate devices combined in one. This means if you are working on something on Windows and detach the laptop to use Android, the work won’t be carried over. However, Lenovo might change this down the line, so we will have to wait and see if users will be able to continue their in tablet mode and vice versa.
Lenovo says the Thinkbook Plus Gen 5 Hyrbid is expected to launch sometime in the second quarter of 2024, with a starting price tag of $1,999 (approx Rs. 1,66,000), but it is still clear if the company will launch it in India.
