At its annual developer conference held in South Korea on Monday, Samsung unveiled its latest AI model – Gauss2 large language model (LLM) – with multimodal capabilities. This second-generation custom AI model from Samsung is said to be more powerful, and efficient.

Available in three different models – compact, balanced, and supreme – Gauss2 can power various kinds of applications and also generate code and images.

Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, President, CTO of the Device eXperience (DX) Division and Head of Samsung Research, stated, “With three distinct models, Samsung Gauss2 is already boosting our internal productivity, and we plan to integrate it into products to deliver higher levels of convenience and personalisation.”

The Gauss2 compact AI model is the smallest of the lot and has been designed for on-device applications with very limited computing environments. The balanced model is designed for different classes of applications. Lastly, the supreme model offers the best possible AI performance and is meant to be a cloud-based AI model.

Samsung’s Gauss2 supports nine to 14 different languages including English and Korean, and these models have been paired with a customised tokeniser to enhance efficiency. A customised tokeniser is designed specifically to break down the text into smaller units while processing, as each language is different. A customised tokeniser for a specific language can help the efficiency of a large language model when compared to a generalised tokeniser.

Samsung is already leveraging the capabilities of these models internally and the same models are expected to power some of the upcoming Galaxy AI experiences on the One UI 7.

Samsung is expected to release the first developer beta of One UI 7 for the Galaxy S24 series in the next few weeks, which is likely to pack some of the new next-generation Galaxy AI experiences. At the global developer conference held a few months ago, Samsung confirmed that One UI 7 will launch with the upcoming Galaxy S25 series of smartphones, which are likely to go official by early February 2025.
