OpenAI, the company that introduced us to ChatGPT two years ago is reportedly preparing for “shipmas”. Starting today, the AI startup may unveil new products, features and demos for the next 12 days.

According to The Verge, the announcement was made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at The New York Times Dealbook conference, who did not share any details on what to expect. But citing sources familiar with the matter, the report suggests some upcoming features may include Sora, the AI-powered text-to-video generator and a new reasoning model.

One of the announcements is also rumoured to include a Santa-like voice for ChatGPT with some users saying that the company is also planning to replace the voice mode button with a snowflake.

The publication says OpenAI employees have also started to tease some upcoming features, with a member of the technical staff at OpenAI posting that they “Got back just in time to put up the shipmas tree.”

Last month, several artists who had been allegedly invited to test Sora leaked it after accusing OpenAI of using them as ‘PR puppets,’ claiming they were doing “unpaid R&D and PR.” Following the incident, OpenAI spokesperson Niko Felix said the company had temporarily paused all user access to Sora.

However, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati had said earlier this year that Sora would be available before the end of 2024, so we may see the text-to-video AI generator in the next few days. Just ahead of Sora, Google announced Veo, its very own generative AI video model which is already available for businesses.
