Tadao Nagasaki, the CEO of OpenAI Japan, while attending the KDDI Summit 2024 made some startling revelations. The CEO said that GPT-Next will be 100 times more powerful than GPT-4. Reportedly, the model will use a smaller version of OpenAI’s mysterious Project Strawberry. Based on reports, the boost in GPT-Next’s performance stems from better architecture and not a vast amount of computing resources.

Below is a rough translation of the report that appeared in the ITMediaAI+.

At the summit, the CEO reaffirmed OpenAI’s commitment to communications and AI. He outlined the AI powerhouse’s business and shared his views on the new AI model that will be announced in the future. This model, according to him, is called GPT-Next.

At the event, Nagasaki went on to say that the number of active ChatGPT users has crossed 200 million as of the end of August. He said that it is the fastest software in history to reach 100-200 million active users at the same time highlighting that there has never been a software that allows users to try AI in such an ‘easy-to-use way’. Nagasaki also said that ChatGPT Enterprise is seeing an increase in the number of companies adopting it.

As of now, OpenAI has around 2000 employees worldwide, half of whom are involved in the development of AI. Other than Japan, OpenAI has bases in the US and the UK. When asked why Japan was chosen as the first base of OpenAI in Asia, Nagasaki replied saying that Japan has a history of being eager to pursue innovation and new technologies.

In his speech, he also spoke about the future of the AI model ‘GPT series’ comparing it to GPT-3 and GPT-4. He said that unlike traditional software, AI technology is growing exponentially and for this reason, OpenAI would like to support the creation of a world with AI at the earliest.

When asked about his journey, the CEO revealed that he served as the CEO of Amazon Web Services Japan between 2011 and 2024, and in April he was appointed as the CEO of OpenAI Japan. OpenAI is the leader in AI and if the translations are accurate, GPT-Next will be the next big leap.
