The pause comes weeks after the BBC complained that the iPhone-maker’s AI summaries feature had twisted its news notifications to show inaccurate facts.

Apple’s AI-generated summaries of notifications from news apps will be temporarily unavailable for users of its beta software.

“With the latest beta software releases of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Notification summaries for the News & Entertainment category will be temporarily unavailable,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying in a CNBC report.

The spokesperson also said that the company was working on improvements to the software that will be dispatched via a future update.

The pause comes weeks after the BBC formally complained that the iPhone-maker’s AI summaries feature had twisted its news notifications to show inaccurate facts to users. It highlights challenges faced by the Cupertino-based tech giant in rolling out its flagship generative AI offering called Apple Intelligence.

Beta users reported seeing a short message inside the iPhone Settings app stating that AI-powered summaries were “temporarily unavailable” for news and entertainment apps.

However, the AI summaries feature is still active for Apple device owners that have the final versions of its operating software.

Besides shutting off the AI summaries feature for the time being, the beta software update issued on Thursday, January 16, also added language to say that Apple Intelligence can produce unexpected results.

The AI-generated summaries of notifications will also be shown in italics to make them stand out from other notifications.

Additionally, Apple rolled out a new and simplified option for users to turn off AI-generated summaries of notifications from any app. The feature can reportedly be turned off by wiping left on the notification from the phone’s lock screen.
