Will your iPhone support Apple Intelligence? Here’s which device will and which won’t

While the iOS 18 update is available for over 20 iPhone models, the creamy layer of this update — Apple Intelligence — is only coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus, launched along with the iPhone 15 Pro series, will miss out on Apple Intelligence.

While Apple has not officially confirmed the reason behind it, several reports said it is due to hardware/computation limitations. To enable some of the Apple Intelligence features, a device needs to have a processor with a strong Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and at least 8 GB of RAM, which are missing from the iPhone 15 and previous models.

However, it might not be the case with the upcoming iPhone 16 series, where all four models — iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max — are said to be powered by the A18 chip, paired with at least 8 GB RAM to bring Apple Intelligence onboard.

Apple is branding the new generative AI features on iPhones, iPads, and Macs as Apple Intelligence, which is already available for users of the iPhone 15 Pro series with the latest version of iOS 18 beta without compromising on privacy or user data, using a private cloud computing technology.

Apple Intelligence is also available for all iPads and Macs, powered by the Apple Silicon M1 or the newer chip, which also includes the first M-series chip-powered MacBook Air and the affordable Mac mini powered by the M1/M2 chip.

Compared to the iPads and Mac, the iPhone 15 Pro (review) series is compatible with most Apple Intelligence features, which includes new writing tools, enabling users to optimise, summarise, or create new content using AI. Besides, Apple Intelligence also allows users to transform a simple sketch into art along with the ability to generate custom animated pictures of their own, known as Genmoji.

Lastly, the new Siri is the highlight of Apple Intelligence, which is powered by ChatGPT and offers every possible response.
