Google had been integrating several generative AI-powered features into Android devices for years, even before AI-powered chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot took the world by storm. From helping you draft an email to solving math problems and summarising messages, here are some of the most useful AI features you can use on your Android phone right now.

Help Me Write

Google’s Help Me Write is an AI-powered feature available in Gmail and Docs, which, as the name suggests, can help users write anything from a simple email to a formal invitation. The functionality can help users save time and help them if they feel like they are stuck on something while writing. Once users give Help Me Write a prompt, the feature can analyse it and generate an elaborated or summarised version of the same.

Magic Editor

Google Photos, one of the most popular gallery apps on Android has several AI-powered features that enhance the overall user experience. Magic Editor, a feature currently available on select Pixel devices, lets you edit specific parts of a photo like the subject, background, or sky.

Apart from being able to reposition the subject to your favourite location and removing objects like bag straps, Magic Editor can also help you relocate and change the scale of the subject and use generative fill to expand the picture.

Google Gemini

Google Gemini, previously known as Bard, is a new voice assistant that might eventually replace Google Assistant, the default digital assistant on the majority of Android devices.

While Gemini can do almost everything Google Assistant is capable of, the AI-powered chatbot on Android devices can also help you draft emails, create a travel plan, and offer information about anything on the internet.

Another Pixel exclusive feature, the ‘Best Take’ feature in Google Photos uses a series of similarly taken photos so everyone in your photo looks good. This is super helpful when clicking group photos, as some in the image might be looking some other way or have their eyes closed.

Android Auto message summariser

Google recently introduced Android Auto, the app that helps you connect your car to your phone. The latest version of the app will automatically summarise long texts and group chat messages so you can drive safely while staying updated.

Google says Android Auto will also suggest relevant replies and actions based on the conversation, allow users to send messages, start calls, or share ETA while focusing on the road.

Photo Stacks and screenshot organiser

Photo Stacks is an AI-powered feature that helps you organise and de-clutter your gallery by automatically identifying and grouping similar photos and organising them into stacks. The app also has a screenshot organiser that can categorise screenshots and images of documents and separate them into albums like event information, ID, and receipts.

Google Maps AI suggestions

Google Maps, the go-to navigation app used by millions last month got some new generative AI-powered features that work behind the scenes to help users discover new places like restaurants and help with shopping recommendations.

The tech giant says Maps will make use of nearby businesses and places along with their reviews and ratings to offer personalised recommendations. For example, if you want to find anime-themed merchandise, Maps will show results organised in different categories like stores, and flea markets. However, the functionality seems to be limited to a handful of users.

Google Lens Talkback and multisearch

Earlier this year, Google supercharged the Lens multisearch feature with generative AI. The improved version of the feature now lets you tweak searches you perform using an image. For example, if you ask Google Lens to search for a red pant and append the word ‘green’, it will search for similar green-coloured pants.

The Lens app also has a new AI-powered accessibility feature called ‘Talkback’, which lets users point the camera at a nearby place, following which Talkback will read out the information available for the location aloud.

Gemini for Workspace

Available for Google Workspace users, Duet AI, now known as Gemini for Workspace, is a set of features powered by the PaLM 2 family of large language models. On the mobile Gmail app, Duet AI will offer contextual assistance, allowing users to send professional replies that automatically fill in data like names and other information.

In Google Docs, Duet AI can help users create content from scratch. Just tell the AI what you want to talk about and it will generate a draft. In the Slides app, it can help generate images from text prompts.

If you use Google Slides, Duet AI can help you automate data classification, create custom plans, understand the context of data in a cell, and more. As for Meet, Google says it uses Duet AI to generate a unique background for video calls.
