With the Paris Olympics underway and athletes winning medals in various disciplines, most casual viewers have the question on who is the athlete to have won the most number of medals in their career at the showpiece event over the years. The answer for the uninitiated is American swimmer Michael Phelps who has an astounding 28 medals to his name despite not taking part in a single Olympics event in the last 8 years.
Phelps has 23 gold medals in his kitty which is miles ahead of Soviet Union gymnast Larisa Latynina who competed from 1956 to 1964 and has 9 gold medals as well as an overall medal collection of 18. Coming in third is Norway’s Marit Bjørgen who has 15 total career medals in Cross-country skiing, including 8 golds.
