Gill (269 off 387 balls) led India’s batting charge as there were two other notable run-makers in Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89).
Gill also became the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England. The skipper also posted the highest individual score by an Indian batter on English soil, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 scored at the Oval in 1979. For England, offie Shoaib Bashir took three wickets.
269 – Shubman Gill recorded the highest-ever Test score by an Indian captain, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 254* (v South Africa, 2019), also the highest by an Indian batter in the World Test Championship. It was also Gill’s highest First-Class score, bettering his 268 for Punjab against Tamil Nadu in 2018.
Only Graeme Smith had recorded a higher score than Gill among Test captains aged 25 or below, incidentally scoring his 277 against England at Edgbaston in 2003.

6 – For the first time in six years, India recorded a 500-plus total in an away Test since their 622/7 in Sydney in 2019. India last crossed 500 in a Test in England in 2007.
587 – The highest score conceded by England under Ben Stokes, who took over as captain in June 2022.
