Statistical highlights on the opening day of the first cricket Test between India and Sri Lanka in Galle.

* Sri Lanka (183) have recorded their second lowest total while batting first in the first innings of a Test match vs India — the lowest being 119 at Ahmedabad in February 1994.

* Playing in his first Test vs Sri Lanka, Ravichandran Ashwin captured six wickets conceding 46 runs — his eleventh five-wicket haul.

* Ashwin has registered his best bowling figures away from home — his third best in Tests — the best being 7 for 103 vs Australia at Chennai in February 2013.

* His bowling figures are the best by an Indian spinner while bowling first in the first innings of an away Test, surpassing the 6 for 94 by Bhagwat Chandrasekhar vs New Zealand at Auckland in January 1976.

* Ashwin’s bowling figures are the best by an Indian bowler vs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, eclipsing the 6 for 102 by Harbhajan Singh at Galle in 2008.

* Ashwin had taken his fifth wicket at 10.3 overs — the fewest overs in which he has claimed five wickets in an innings.

* Sri Lanka have lost five wickets managing just 65 runs at lunch. The last instance India had dismissed five batsmen before lunch on the first day of a Test match was vs Bangladesh in 2010 at Mirpur in January 2010.

* During the course of his third Test fifty, Shikhar Dhawan has completed his 1,000 runs in Tests – his tally being 1049 at an average of 43.70, in 15 Tests

* Dhawan is the 13th Indian batsman to complete 1000 runs in 25 innings or less in Tests.

* In his last 10 Test/ODI innings in Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma has managed 42 runs at an average of 4.2 — his sequence being 4, 0, 11, 5, 5, 0, 0, 4, 4 and 9.

* Amit Mishra is playing his first Test since September 2011 — his last Test being vs England at The Oval in August 2011. In between he missed 33 Tests.

* Mishra had last taken a wicket exactly four years ago on August 12, 2011 — his figures being 43-2-150-3 vs England at Edgbaston.

* Angelo Matthews’ second fifty (64) vs India is his 22nd in Tests. His highest vs India is 99 at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai in December 2009.

* Dinesh Chandimal’s first fifty vs India on his maiden appearance is his eighth in Tests.

* Matthews and Chandimal put on 79 runs for the sixth wicket – Sri Lanka’s highest partnership for the sixth wicket vs India at Galle.

* Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli put on 100 (unbroken) for the third wicket — India’s second highest at Galle next only to the 119 between Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in 2010.

* Angelo Matthews became the 15th player to have appeared in 50 Tests or more for Sri Lanka.

* Matthews enjoys superb batting record as captain in Tests — his aggregate being 1858 in 19 Tests at an average of 71.46, including four hundreds and 11 fifties.

* Only two Sri Lankan batsmen have played 50 Tests or more apart from averaging fifty-plus in Tests – Kumar Sangakkara (57.79) and Matthews (51.85).
